About This Place

Yamaya Japanese Wagyu & Grill is a standout destination for lovers of authentic Japanese yakiniku and premium wagyu beef, nestled conveniently on Pacific Coast Highway in Torrance, CA. Specializing in Japanese barbecue and hot pot delights, this inviting restaurant offers a truly immersive dining experience where guests grill their own exquisite cuts right at the table, creating a social and interactive atmosphere that’s perfect for lunch outings or relaxed dinners.

The star of the menu is undoubtedly the Wagyu BBQ Chef’s Cut, a sumptuous 8oz beef tongue that masterfully balances tender, melt-in-your-mouth textures with bold, rich flavor. Alongside this centerpiece, you’ll find an impressive variety of premium selections including the beautifully marbled Premium Short Rib, the savory and juicy Outside Skirt (Harami), and exclusive treat such as the Kobe Beef and Beef Sashimi. For those craving something different, the Yamaya Motsunabe for 1-2 People offers an authentic hot pot experience with tender offal simmered in a flavorful broth packed with umami depth.

Complementing the meats are thoughtfully crafted side dishes like crunchy housemade pickles, refreshing tomato salad, and indulgent fried beef stomach, alongside unique flavor enhancers such as wasabi, yuzu pepper, and truffle salt. The beverage program includes a well-curated selection of sake and wines that pair beautifully with the rich beef flavors, elevating the overall meal.

The ambiance at Yamaya is a blend of clean, dim lighting and a cozy, unpretentious atmosphere that puts the spotlight firmly on the food. While some guests have noted the ventilation might feel a bit smoky—an honest trade-off for the genuine yakiniku experience—the friendly and professional service makes every visit welcoming and seamless. Many appreciate the balance between premium quality and accessible pricing, especially during happy hour when a variety of menu items become delightfully affordable.

Customers consistently praise the freshness and exceptional quality of the meats. One diner described it as “the best meats of any Japanese BBQ I’ve ever been to,” highlighting the real wagyu selections and the relaxed, unstuffy environment. Another user remarked on the attentive, warm service that enhances the overall dining journey. Yamaya’s commitment to authenticity shines through in every dish, making it a must-visit spot for anyone eager to savor Japan’s finest beef traditions in Southern California.

Really liked the food. The happy hour menu was priced so you can enjoy many items. The meats were marinated well, and you get the experience of grilling your own food. The atmosphere is typical. The location is convenient if you live in the local area. The only reason this is a 4/5 is because the ventilation didn’t seem all that well (perhaps just our table?). It was smokier than what I’ve typically experienced. I’d still recommend this place to a fellow patron because the food was tasty.

Yamaya is an outstanding place to try Japanese style beef. I had lunch here, we tried the washu beef combo and one of the specials (a rib eye called "supersteak"). Everything was super fresh. The service were helpful and attentive. The best part, was lunch wasn't too expensive (although I saw dinner could be much more).

The best meats of any Japanese BBQ I've ever been to. Real wygu meats, and the others are still very top notch. I'm so happy to have found this place nearby! The best meats without a stuffy atomophere.

Yamaya Japanese Wagyu & Grill is a Japanese yakiniku specialist in the Torrance area. Ventilation is not bad, but expect to get smelly. The dimly lit dining room is clean and tidy. Servers are friendly, professional and accommodating. Corkage is US$ 25/btl. Food is fresh and of great quality. While side dishes such as Moyashi Namui (US$4.8) and Green Salad ($5.8) are refreshing, the different cuts of wagyu are simply delicious! Highly recommend the crunchy Chef’s Cut Tongue (US$42.8), the juicy Premium Short Ribs (US$ 34.8) and Outside Skirt (US$ 29.8).

Walked in without reservation on a Saturday. Thankfully they sat me. Good meat. Good price. Ventilation needs to be better. They may be slightly understaffed but was a good overall experience.
